| (VOA) - Engineers in Chile are continuing to cut an escape path to save 33 miners who are trapped 600 meters underground. They have been trapped in the gold and copper mine since August 5th. Officials say the drilling machine will cut at a rate of about six meters per day. The drill will first create a narrow hole. Then a larger drill device will widen the tunnel. A rescue device will pull the miners to the surface. The drilling will send up to 4,000 tons of rock into the area where the miners are sheltered. Officials say the miners will have to help in their rescue by clearing the rock as it falls. | | | | |

Oil Eating Bacteria Cleaning up BP's Oil Spill |
|
 | Ian Taylor & Thien Tri | Saturday, Aug 28, 2010 | (VOA) - American scientists say a newly discovered kind of bacteria is eating oil in the Gulf of Mexico more quickly than researchers and officials had expected. Researchers at the Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory announced the discovery Tuesday. The scientists say the new bacterium does not use as much oxygen as other bacteria. Researchers have been measuring oxygen levels in the gulf to find out how much oil spilled there after a BP oil rig exploded in April. Earlier this month, government scientists said about 75 percent of the oil had been removed or had left the area. Other studies disputed that the new study was carried out with money provided by BP. Researchers say the money was given before the spill and it’s unconnected. |

Psychic Croc Picks Election Winner |
|
 | Edward Evans - Nguyen Tri Duc | Thursday, Aug 26, 2010 | (Reuters) - The audience is hushed - Harry the psychic crocodile is about to predict Australia's next Prime Minister. Harry's handler, Nigel Plamer, says he has no idea who Harry likes for victory. "Harry is from a very conservative background as far as I know his history so it will be interesting to see which way he goes." So, will it be Labor leader Julia Gillard or Liberal leader Tony Abbott? It's a win for Gillard, says Harry. A bit stingy with her chicken, though, isn't she? |
